Incoming House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas of Oklahoma told Larry Dreiling of the High Plains Journal in October that one of his first actions would be a hearing on the proposed GIPSA Rule. He wanted to question Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack and GIPSA Administrator J. Dudley Butler about the Rule and its impact on the livestock industry. When asked what would happen if Vilsack or Butler didn’t want to testify, Lucas mentioned that Congressional committees have subpoena power.
Since that time, Lucas has met with other groups of cattlemen and reiterated his intention.
In his news release upon election as chairman, Lucas mentioned the need to get our current waiting free trade agreements passed and work for other export opportunities. He also mentioned preventing EPA from crippling American agriculture and stifling economic growth.
The release didn’t mention the GIPSA Rule but we’re hoping he acts quickly to do something about this rule with its horrible, destructive potential for American animal agriculture.
